Science has established that the human brain requires the use of both its left and right sides(hemispheres) to achieve its full potential (and maintain it!) However, education in most schools is based on developing primarily the left part of the human brain, thus leaving main functions of the right brain underdeveloped. These functions are:
- Creativity
- Associative Thinking (problem solving, creative solutions)
- Ability to See Beyond Obvious (inference, critical thinking)
These are all examples of the 'left brain' approach to teaching: linear thinking is encouraged, step by step instructions are given, following directions is praised (if you got the right answer but did not use the pre-set path, the answer will be considered wrong). In summation, a "stay in your seat and be quiet" attitude is encouraged. The fact that different kids learn differently is ignored in our educational system.
An effective solution to this problem is the active engagement on routine basis of the right brain in activities such as art and music. These activities develop creativity, associations, and the ability to see more than just the obvious. Humans use both right and left parts of their body to be skilled and successful. Why not develop symmeterical functions of both brain parts to create a foundation for your child's success? It is well known that we use less than 10% of our estimated brain potential for our everyday living. Imagine the kind of results we could achieve if we fully utilize what we were given by nature!
